Hello and welcome to our blog! Today we are very excited to introduce you to our latest creation: Second Son Powder Monkey Spiced Rum. This is a rum that pays tribute to the brave and adventurous powder monkeys who served on naval ships during the Age of Sail.
What is a powder monkey, you ask? Well, according to Wikipedia, a powder monkey was a boy or young teen who manned naval artillery guns as a member of a warship's crew. His chief role was to ferry gunpowder from the powder magazine in the ship's hold to the artillery pieces, either in bulk or as cartridges, to minimize the risk of fires and explosions. They were chosen for their speed and height: they were short and could move more easily in the limited space between decks and would also be hidden behind the ship's gunwale, keeping them from being shot by enemy ships' sharpshooters.
We wanted to honour these fearless youngsters with a rum that captures their spirit of adventure and courage. That's why we created Second Son Powder Monkey Spiced Rum, a golden spiced rum with complex flavour profile, with notes of burnt sugar, vanilla, mixed spices and star anise.
Second Son Powder Monkey Spiced Rum is perfect for sipping over ice or mixing with your favourite mixer. But if you want to try something different, we have a special cocktail recipe for you: the Powder Monkey Punch.
